So, an asshole wearing a MAGA hat walks into a bar: advice for bar owners

So, a guy wearing a Trump “Make America Great Again” hat walks into a bar…

Sounds like an old joke, but this is a news story from the New York Post. Apparently, this guy, Greg Piatek, 30, an accountant from Philadelphia, walked into the bar wearing Trump’s trademark red ball cap. After the first round of drinks with his friends the bar refused to serve him a second round. So he’s suing, claiming they discriminated against him.

I have a few things to say about this. One, you may have on occasion seen a sign in a shop that states “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone,” and that is certainly an establishment’s prerogative, provided it is not for the reason of race, gender, sexuality or religion. This is not the same as the case of the  Washington state florist who refused to sell flowers for a gay wedding. The Washington state supreme court ruled against her because it was, despite the florist’s argument that it was her religious prerogative to refuse the sale, discriminatory. She can believe whatever she wants, but she can’t treat people differently because of who they are.

In the case of the asshole wearing the Trump hat this was not discrimination; this was the bar owner’s prerogative. If the bar owner refused service to a guy wearing a Nazi swastika, or a guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “FUCK YOU” on the front (yes, I once saw a dude wearing a shirt like this), I think few would complain. This guy has the right to express whatever he wants and wear whatever stupid hat he wants; the bar owner has the right not to serve him.

Additionally, you gotta figure this guy was asking for trouble wearing that hat. Unless he’s been in a coma for the past year or so and has no clue what the hell is going on, he has to expect that people are going to react. Here’s a photo of the guy with his lawyer, Paul Liggieri. They both look like assholes.

Bar owners, do yourselves a favor and institute a dress code: no hats. Hats shouldn’t be worn indoors anyway. And this way, the next time an asshole comes in with a red MAGA hat you can ask him or her to remove it, citing the dress code prominently displayed at the entrance and avoid ridiculous litigation from said asshole.
